The Bartlett Promise Scholarship 2026: Opening Doors to Built Environment Education at UCL

The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London (UCL) is internationally recognised for excellence in architecture, planning, urban design, sustainability and infrastructure studies. Alongside its academic leadership, The Bartlett has made a clear commitment to improving access, equity and representation within the built environment disciplines. Central to this mission is the Bartlett Promise Scholarship, a transformative funding initiative created to support students whose potential may otherwise be limited by financial or structural barriers.

What Is the Bartlett Promise Scholarship?

The Bartlett Promise Scholarship is more than a financial award. It is a long-term commitment to widening participation and addressing inequality in higher education. The programme recognises that talent exists across all communities and that academic achievement should be considered alongside personal circumstances and lived experience.

Rather than focusing solely on grades, the scholarship assesses applicants holistically, taking into account social, educational and financial context. Successful scholars receive full tuition fee coverage alongside a generous living allowance, allowing them to focus fully on their studies without the pressure of financial insecurity. In addition, recipients gain access to academic guidance, professional development opportunities and a supportive network of peers and mentors.

Who Is the Scholarship Designed For?

The Bartlett Promise Scholarship supports students at different stages of study while maintaining the same core objective: increasing representation within the built environment.

Undergraduate Promise Scholarship

This award is available to UK-domiciled students enrolling in undergraduate programmes at The Bartlett. It covers full tuition fees and includes an annual maintenance allowance to assist with living and study costs. Applicants must meet at least one widening participation criterion, such as financial hardship, disability, care experience, being first in their family to attend university, or belonging to an underrepresented background.

Master’s Promise Scholarship

The Master’s Promise Scholarship is aimed at UK-domiciled students who have received an offer to study on a Bartlett postgraduate programme. It provides full tuition funding and a substantial annual living allowance. The scholarship supports students from backgrounds that are underrepresented within built environment professions and helps remove financial barriers at postgraduate level.

Additional Promise pathways also exist for postgraduate researchers and international students from specific regions, further broadening access across the faculty.

Eligibility Overview

While specific requirements differ by award, applicants typically must:

  • Hold UK home fee status or be recognised as a forced migrant
  • Have an offer to study on an eligible Bartlett programme
  • Be studying at that academic level for the first time
  • Meet at least one widening participation criterion, such as financial need, disability, care experience or being first-generation in higher education

The scholarship is designed to reach students whose educational journeys may have been shaped by disadvantage but who demonstrate strong motivation and potential.

More Than Financial Support

A defining feature of the Bartlett Promise Scholarship is the community it creates. Scholars are supported throughout their studies through mentoring, skills development workshops and networking opportunities. This structure ensures that recipients are not only funded but also equipped with the confidence, connections and tools needed to succeed academically and professionally.

In some cases, scholars also participate in leadership development and community engagement initiatives, strengthening their impact beyond the classroom.

Why the Bartlett Promise Matters

The built environment shapes how people live, work and interact with their surroundings. Yet the professions responsible for designing these spaces have historically lacked diversity. The Bartlett Promise Scholarship directly addresses this imbalance by investing in students from underrepresented backgrounds and empowering them to shape more inclusive and sustainable cities.

By combining financial support, mentorship and opportunity, the Bartlett Promise is helping redefine who gets to lead the future of the built environment.
