A key focus of the programme is participation in the Human Rights Report Card 2025. Interns are actively involved in compiling this annual report, which evaluates the state of human rights across South Africa. Duties include collating research, submissions, articles, and statements; examining academic publications; analyzing laws and court decisions; and reviewing reports from government departments, parliamentary committees, and organizations. Interns are also tasked with monitoring the media to identify any developments that impact constitutional rights.
In addition to research, interns contribute to the launch of the Human Rights Report Card 2025, assisting with event logistics, invitations, and post-event communications. The internship also involves supporting the annual Constitutional Rights Conference in Johannesburg, held each July. Interns help coordinate invitations, communications, and the smooth running of conference events, gaining valuable experience in public engagement and advocacy.

Developing Critical Skills
Writing is a cornerstone of the internship. Interns are expected to produce at least two articles per month on topics related to constitutional rights research. Beyond writing, interns are tasked with desktop research on constitutional topics, monitoring proposed legislation, attending Portfolio Committee meetings, and participating in discussions with other organizations regarding developments that affect human rights in South Africa.
Interns also support the Foundation’s marketing efforts, providing content such as videos or informational material for social media platforms. Administrative tasks, though secondary to research and advocacy, are part of the experience and help interns gain insight into the operational side of a nonprofit organization. Regular check-in meetings with supervisors ensure that interns receive guidance, feedback, and mentorship throughout the programme.

While applications for the Constitutional Rights Programme are currently open, the Constitutional Advancement Programme will begin accepting applications in February 2026. Applicants should note that the deadline for the current internship intake is 25 January 2026, with the programme starting on 2 February 2026.
