Position Overview

The Senior IT Assistant will work under the direct supervision of a senior officer and receive technical guidance from an IT Officer at the branch or multi-country office level. The role involves supporting daily ICT operations and ensuring that UNHCR staff have reliable technology systems to carry out their humanitarian duties.

The incumbent may also supervise telecommunications operators and collaborate with staff across different UN offices and partner organizations. The role requires both technical expertise and the ability to work in a collaborative international environment.

Because the duty station is in a hardship location with a non-family assignment and danger pay, the position is suited for professionals prepared to work in challenging conditions while contributing to meaningful humanitarian work.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior IT Assistant will support a wide range of IT and communication activities within the office and surrounding operational areas. Some of the primary responsibilities include:

ICT Infrastructure Management

The role involves monitoring and maintaining network systems including LAN networks, servers, routers, switches, and printers. The Senior IT Assistant will also ensure that satellite modems, patch panels, and wireless access points function properly.

Installation and Maintenance

The selected candidate will conduct field missions to install new ICT equipment and perform routine maintenance. This includes configuring computer hardware, installing software packages, and repairing or upgrading systems when necessary.

Communication Systems Support

UNHCR relies on various communication technologies for coordination and emergency response. The Senior IT Assistant will help maintain HF and VHF radio systems, satellite communication equipment, and other telecom infrastructure used by field teams.

User Support and Training

The role includes assisting staff with technical issues and providing training on communication tools such as email systems, handheld radios, and telecommunication devices. The goal is to ensure staff can use available technology effectively.

Data Security and Backups

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

Applicants must have at least two years of relevant ICT experience with a high school diploma, or one year of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Technical Skills
