About the GEDSI & Climate Internship

The GEDSI & Climate Internship focuses on integrating inclusive development principles into Lao PDR’s emerging carbon market systems and climate policies.

Lao PDR is experiencing increasing climate challenges, including floods, droughts, and shifting rainfall patterns. These environmental changes affect agriculture, forests, and rural livelihoods across the country. To address these challenges, the government has embedded GEDSI principles into key strategies such as:

• The National Green Growth Strategy of Lao PDR until 2030
• The Draft 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan
• The Draft Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0)

GGGI is supporting the country in preparing for participation in international carbon markets, including cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and voluntary carbon market mechanisms.

However, gender and social inclusion gaps can limit participation in these opportunities. The internship program aims to help ensure that women, youth, and persons with disabilities benefit from climate initiatives and carbon market development.

Key Responsibilities

During the internship, the selected candidate will contribute to the GEDSI & Climate Initiative and support a variety of research, coordination, and engagement activities.

Major responsibilities include:

1. Conducting Research
The intern will research ways to integrate GEDSI considerations into national carbon market policies and strategies.

2. Preparing Advisory Notes
They will help draft a GEDSI advisory note that guides project developers in integrating social inclusion principles into carbon market projects.

3. Supporting Events and Mentorship Programs
The intern will assist with organizing workshops, mentorship programs, and awareness events, including logistics coordination and communication with participants.

4. Stakeholder Engagement
The role includes working with key stakeholders such as:

• Lao Women’s Union
• Lao Youth Union
• Organizations representing persons with disabilities
• Universities and civil society organizations

5. Content Development
The intern will support the drafting of research papers, reports, and communication materials related to GEDSI integration in climate initiatives.

6. Administrative Support
Additional duties include meeting scheduling, documentation, note-taking, and providing general program support.

This role offers valuable exposure to international climate policy and inclusive development frameworks.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the GGGI internship program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree OR currently studying in a Master’s or PhD program in fields such as economics, public administration, environmental studies, gender studies, or development studies.
• Alternatively, applicants may be recent graduates (within the last 12 months).
• Demonstrate a strong interest in climate policy, carbon markets, gender equality, disability inclusion, or sustainable development.
• Experience in community work, youth engagement, or volunteer activities is considered an advantage.
• Skills in research, writing, or event coordination are beneficial.
• Applicants must have excellent English language skills, while knowledge of Lao is considered an advantage.
