The Role: Website Engineer Consultant

As a Website Engineer Consultant, you will join the Website Operations team to manage and maintain the codebase for Amnesty International’s Humanity WordPress Theme. Reporting to the Lead Website Engineer and Technical Product Owner, you will play a critical role in maintaining high standards of security, accessibility, and performance for the organization’s websites.

This consultancy covers 52 days over six months (approximately 2 days per week) with the possibility of extension, making it an ideal opportunity for professionals seeking flexible, high-impact work.

Key Responsibilities

The consultant will be expected to:

  • Respond to critical incidents: Be on-call to resolve urgent website issues, including deploying releases when required. On-call arrangements will be agreed upon with the team.
  • Develop new features and improvements: Contribute to the organization’s development roadmap, which focuses on:
    • Enhancing website accessibility, security, and performance to maximize global reach.
    • Optimizing publishing and workflow capabilities within the CMS to improve the accessibility of Amnesty International reports at scale.
    • Implementing major improvements to the multilingual aspects of Amnesty’s websites.
  • Code development: Deliver high-quality code that adheres to the team’s standards, collaborating with the Lead Engineer and other team members.
  • Contingency support: Provide backup for critical incidents when the Lead Engineer is unavailable, ensuring continuity of operations.

This role requires a proactive, solution-oriented mindset and the ability to navigate complex technical challenges in a fast-paced environment.
