This role sits under the FAO Mongolia Office (FAMON), which leads projects aimed at improving food and nutrition security, enhancing livestock production systems, and strengthening environmental management across the country. The incumbent will report directly to the FAO Representative in Mongolia and coordinate closely with FAO technical experts from the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) and the National Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock (NSAL) team.

Key Responsibilities

The Livestock Climate Expert will focus on delivering outcomes that align with national climate and livestock strategies, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) from the livestock sector. Core responsibilities include:

1. Policy and Strategic Guidance:
   • Develop policy recommendations for livestock sector SLCP reductions in line with Mongolia’s National Methane Roadmap.
   • Ensure alignment with national climate objectives and integration into Mongolia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and broader climate policy.
   • Conduct stakeholder mapping and consultations to secure commitment on livestock SLCP targets.
   • Produce and disseminate awareness-raising materials to promote updated policy frameworks.
2. Technical and Analytical Support:
   • Enhance and adapt the Tier 2 tool for GHG and SLCP emission measurement in livestock systems.
   • Collaborate with international experts, including FAO GLEAM specialists, to model extensive livestock systems accurately.
   • Support multiple herd management scenarios and site-specific emissions calculations, integrating seasonal variations and pasture characteristics.
   • Co-produce credible GHG emission results for selected provinces or ecological zones.
3. Capacity Building and Knowledge Transfer:
   • Organize workshops, trainings, consultations, and field missions to build the capacity of government officials and sector stakeholders in GHG emission assessments and mitigation strategies.
   • Develop training materials, manuals, and operational documents for government and sectoral officials.

4. Project Implementation and Coordination:
   • Draft project operational documents including terms of reference, letters of agreement, requests for proposals, and bidding documents.
   • Conduct background research on methane pledges, sectoral policies, and climate strategies.
   • Assist in compiling reports, strategies, and assessments while maintaining FAO standards for accuracy and consistency.

Candidate Requirements

• Education: Master’s degree in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Climate Science, or a related field. PhD holders will be considered an asset.
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in climate change, livestock, or environmental sciences.
