Project Background

FAO is supporting Tunisia in developing a national project titled:

“Climate Resilient Agriculture and Livelihoods in Southern Tunisia (CRALST)”

The initiative aims to:

  • Improve climate resilience
  • Strengthen rural livelihoods
  • Protect fragile ecosystems

To finalize the project proposal, a Climate Impact and Potential Analysis (CIPA) is required. The Climate Risks and Agrometeorologist Specialist will provide data-driven insights to strengthen the project’s climate rationale.

Key Responsibilities

As a consultant, you will play a vital role in analyzing climate risks and their impact on agriculture. Your responsibilities will include:

Climate Data Analysis

  • Collect and synthesize historical and future climate data
  • Analyze climate hazards (frequency, intensity, duration)
  • Assess extreme weather trends and their impacts

Agricultural Impact Assessment

  • Study how climate risks affect crop production and farming systems
  • Develop crop suitability maps using analytical tools
  • Analyze loss and damage data linked to climate hazards

Risk & Vulnerability Evaluation

  • Assess vulnerability of ecosystems and communities
  • Evaluate adaptive capacity in project areas
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen resilience

Technical Support

  • Integrate climate risk insights into the funding proposal
  • Review climate indicators and advisory systems
  • Support the development of adaptation strategies

Required Qualifications

To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Education

  • Advanced degree in:
    • Climate Science
    • Environmental Science
    • Agricultural Climatology
    • Natural Resource Management
  • OR a bachelor’s degree plus two additional years of experience

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • Proven expertise in:
    • Climate change adaptation
    • Agrometeorology
    • Climate risk analysis

Languages

  • Working knowledge of English and Arabic

Technical Skills

Strong candidates will also demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in R programming and Jupyter Notebooks
  • Experience with GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS)
