Despite Brazil’s progress in tackling hunger, Indigenous communities still face disproportionately high levels of malnutrition. To address this, UNICEF, alongside government partners, has developed an innovative tool called the Indigenous Food Systems Matrix.

This consultancy focuses on the second phase of the project—training stakeholders, applying the Matrix in selected territories, and developing actionable, community-driven plans.

The selected consultant will play a central role in ensuring that food systems are better understood and that targeted interventions can be designed to improve nutrition and food security.

Project Locations and Travel

While the role is largely remote, it includes essential fieldwork across three regions in Brazil:

Cruzeiro do Sul
Cuiabá
Fortaleza

Each location requires two visits, making a total of six trips:

• 12-day visit: Training and Matrix application
• 4-day visit: Development of intersectoral action plans

These field missions are crucial for engaging directly with communities and ensuring the Matrix is effectively implemented.

Key Responsibilities

This consultancy is structured around four main objectives:

1. Develop Technical Frameworks

You’ll describe the conceptual and technical aspects related to Indigenous food systems to guide training and implementation methodologies.

2. Conduct Training Workshops

You’ll train local stakeholders, ensuring they understand how to use the Matrix and interpret its findings effectively.

3. Field Assessments

The consultant will actively participate in applying the Matrix within communities to diagnose food system challenges.

4. Support Action Plan Development

Deliverables and Timeline

The consultancy follows a structured, results-based approach with eight key deliverables:

• Deliverable 1: Work plan (within 15 days)
• Deliverable 2: Technical guidance documents
• Deliverables 3, 5, and 7: Training and Matrix application reports for each territory
• Deliverables 4, 6, and 8: Action plan development reports for each territory

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• A Master’s or PhD (completed or in progress) in fields related to public health, environmental studies, or Indigenous food systems
• Proven experience in facilitating workshops and participatory processes
• Experience conducting fieldwork in Indigenous territories
• Strong technical writing and analytical skills
• Excellent organizational abilities and ability to meet deadlines
• Willingness to travel and work in remote environments

Experience in Phase I of the Indigenous Food Systems Project will be considered an advantage.

Language Requirement

Fluency in Portuguese is required, as all training sessions, documentation, and field interactions will be conducted in the language.
