Role Overview
The Senior Youth Advocacy Specialist is a critical leadership position within IRC’s Elevate Youth Program in Sacramento. This program is designed to engage young people, equip them with leadership skills, and provide opportunities to influence decisions that affect their communities. In this role, you will:
- Lead youth advocacy initiatives across multiple program areas
- Supervise program staff and activities to ensure high-quality service delivery
- Partner with schools, community organizations, and local stakeholders
- Oversee program operations, reporting, and grant compliance
The Senior Youth Advocacy Specialist works closely with the Youth Leadership Council (YLC), a group of Afghan youth leaders. You will support them in designing community initiatives, engaging peers, and advocating on important issues such as mental health, education access, and substance abuse prevention. Your guidance will empower youth to take leadership roles while building confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities
Youth Engagement & Leadership
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and skills development to youth participants
- Facilitate leadership and advocacy training programs tailored to youth needs
- Coach program staff in youth-centered engagement strategies
- Ensure activities are culturally responsive and inclusive
Community Partnerships & Outreach
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with local schools, organizations, and community leaders
- Facilitate youth participation in community events and advocacy campaigns
- Expand opportunities for youth to share their voices with decision-makers
Program Oversight & Reporting
- Manage program documentation, reporting, and grant compliance requirements
- Track key metrics and monitor outcomes to continuously improve program impact
- Lead planning sessions, staff meetings, and program evaluations
Operational & Administrative Duties
- Ensure smooth day-to-day program operations and administrative processes
- Maintain accurate records of program activities and participant engagement
- Support team development and coordinate with other IRC departments
Who They’re Looking For
The ideal candidate brings professional expertise, leadership experience, and a passion for youth development. Key qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
- 1–3 years of experience in youth advocacy, counseling, or program management
- Experience managing grant-funded programs and reporting outcomes
- Strong communication, organizational, and cross-cultural skills
- Ability to supervise staff and mentor youth effectively
- Language skills in Dari, Farsi, Pashto, or Arabic are a plus
