Human Rights Watch is inviting applications for the position of Associate in its Africa Division, based in Nairobi, Kenya. About the Associate Role

The Associate will provide administrative and operational support to staff working across several African countries. The role reports to one of the division’s deputy directors and combines administration, communication, research, logistics, and coordination responsibilities.

This Nairobi-based position follows a hybrid work arrangement. The selected candidate will work from the office at least two to three days each week, with the option to work remotely on other days. Applicants must, however, live within commuting distance of the Nairobi office.

Key Responsibilities

The Associate will support the Africa Division in various important tasks. Daily responsibilities include scheduling meetings, coordinating travel arrangements, preparing meeting minutes, managing filing systems, and responding to information requests.

The role also involves editing, formatting, proofreading, and distributing documents such as reports, briefing papers, publications, press releases, and web content. Candidates may occasionally assist with drafting materials and supporting online publication processes.

Another important aspect of the role is language and translation support. The Associate may help vet documents, coordinate translations into English and Kiswahili, and assist with interpretation during meetings or field activities.

The successful candidate will also support external engagements, including meetings with advisory committees and stakeholders. Duties may include preparing briefing notes, organizing events, and coordinating logistics for conferences, retreats, and staff gatherings.

Additionally, the Associate will help manage divisional finances, maintain communication between HRW offices and external partners, assist with recruitment and mentoring of interns, and provide logistical support during staff travel across East and Horn of Africa countries.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Human Rights Watch is looking for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, social sciences, or a related field. Applicants with equivalent professional experience may also be considered.

Candidates must have at least one year of relevant work experience. Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are essential. Knowledge of French, Kiswahili, or another relevant African language will be considered an advantage.

The organization is seeking individuals with a demonstrated interest in international human rights and sub-Saharan Africa. Experience related to the region is desirable but not mandatory.

Applicants should also possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to work under pressure, and the capacity to manage multiple assignments simultaneously. Since the role involves collaboration across different countries and offices, teamwork and independent problem-solving abilities are highly valued.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required, while experience using project management platforms such as Asana is considered beneficial.

Importantly, applicants must already possess valid authorization to work in Kenya, as Human Rights Watch is unable to sponsor work permits for this position.
