The Role: Marketing and Communications Officer (Freelance)

Climate Home News is hiring a freelance Marketing and Communications Officer to work remotely for 20 hours per week.

This fully remote position offers flexibility in working hours, making it ideal for professionals based anywhere in the world, provided they can coordinate effectively with the team and engage with its global audience.

The role reports directly to the Development Manager and is considered a strategic priority for the organisation as it seeks to expand its subscription programme.

Key Responsibilities

This position is dynamic and multi-faceted, combining digital marketing, audience engagement, analytics, and strategic communications.

1. Marketing & Social Media Management

The successful candidate will manage Climate Home News’ LinkedIn account with a strong focus on:

  • Increasing brand recognition
  • Growing the core audience
  • Driving website traffic
  • Supporting subscription growth

This involves crafting engaging posts, interacting with followers, and aligning content with key topics in global climate discourse.

2. Newsletter Leadership

The Marketing and Communications Officer will lead work on newsletters such as Climate Weekly and event bulletins. Responsibilities include:

  • Growing the mailing list
  • Maintaining a healthy subscriber database
  • Improving open and click-through rates
  • Using A/B testing to optimise performance

These efforts directly support revenue growth through subscriptions.

3. SEO & AI Optimisation

In today’s digital media environment, search visibility is crucial. The role includes working alongside colleagues to:

  • Ensure high-quality SEO across published content
  • Target key phrases relevant to climate audiences
  • Maximise visibility on search engines and AI platforms

4. Audience Engagement & Community Building

The officer will contribute to building a vibrant community of readers by nurturing relationships and ensuring a strong user experience.

Engagement strategies will include direct communication via social media, email, and surveys.

5. Monitoring & Reporting

Data-driven decision-making is central to the role. You will:

  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Analyse data from platforms like Google Analytics and email marketing tools
  • Provide reports to colleagues and donors
  • Help inform editorial and strategic decisions

6. Events & Partnerships

Climate Home News plans to host both online and in-person events, including a livestreamed event during London Climate Action Week and monthly webinars.

The Marketing and Communications Officer will help develop and promote these initiatives to increase brand visibility and subscriber growth.

Additionally, the role includes supporting media partnerships and website optimisation efforts to enhance user experience and increase repeat visitors.
