About the Opportunity
The Communication Officer will help design and implement communication strategies for the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation and the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI). WPDI was founded in 2012 by Forest Whitaker to empower young people and women in communities affected by violence, poverty, and marginalization.
WPDI works in countries across Africa, Europe, North America, and Latin America. Its programs focus on peacebuilding, health, livelihoods, education, and sports. The organization collaborates closely with UNESCO and several UN agencies, including UN Women, International Organization for Migration, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Main Responsibilities
The selected candidate will support communication activities linked to UNESCO and WPDI programs operating in 11 locations across South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Mexico, France, and the United States.
Key duties include:
- Developing and implementing communication strategies across social media, newsletters, websites, and print materials
- Drafting speeches, articles, press releases, op-eds, blog posts, and human-interest stories
- Coordinating communication campaigns and high-visibility events
- Supporting the missions of Forest Whitaker through briefing notes and fact sheets
- Producing communication materials to strengthen partnerships and visibility
- Managing communications plans for events and partners
- Ensuring reports and technical materials are professionally edited and distributed
The role reports directly to the Liaison Officer for the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold an advanced university degree such as a Master’s in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
Candidates should also have:
- At least 5 years of professional experience in communications, media, public relations, or digital communication
- Excellent English writing and speaking skills
- Strong drafting and editing abilities
- Experience with social media and digital communication tools
- Knowledge of Adobe XD, InDesign, MailChimp, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office
- The ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
Knowledge of French or Spanish is considered an advantage.
