The Role: Scaling Growth for Long-Term Impact

The Director of Acquisition and Growth plays a central role in solving one of the most important challenges in fundraising: growing and sustaining the donor base.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Mass Market Fundraising, this leader will oversee all U.S.-based mass market donor acquisition efforts — from digital acquisition and direct mail to performance marketing, emerging channels, and future models like face-to-face fundraising.

This is not just about acquiring new donors. It is about:

  • Building high-quality donor relationships
  • Increasing retention and lifetime value
  • Strengthening long-term file health
  • Transitioning the donor base toward a majority monthly giving model over the next 5–10 years

The role requires strategic vision, analytical depth, and the ability to scale a multi-million-dollar acquisition program with significant growth potential.

Key Responsibilities

Acquisition Strategy & Growth Leadership

The Director will lead a comprehensive, integrated acquisition strategy across online and offline channels. Digital acquisition is expected to be a primary driver of future growth, but integration with traditional channels like direct mail remains essential.

A major priority is designing and scaling a monthly donor acquisition program that moves beyond one-time conversions to sustained giving relationships. This long-term strategy will help Mercy Corps build a more predictable and resilient funding base.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Expanding and diversifying acquisition channels
  • Leading performance-driven awareness campaigns in partnership with Brand Marketing
  • Aligning acquisition strategy with retention efforts
  • Translating organizational growth goals into actionable investment plans

Performance, Analytics & Financial Leadership

This position serves as the business manager for mass market acquisition investments. The Director will oversee expense and revenue budgets, manage forecasting, and lead performance reporting.

Key focus areas include:

  • Cost-to-acquire metrics
  • First-year value
  • Long-term return on investment
  • Lifetime donor value

The role requires close collaboration with analytics teams, Development Operations, and agency partners to refine segmentation, targeting, testing, and performance measurement. Data-driven decision-making will guide scaling strategies while managing financial risk.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Influence

Success in this role depends heavily on partnership and influence. The Director will work closely with:

  • The Director of Retention & Loyalty
  • Brand Marketing teams
  • Communications
  • Development Operations
  • External agencies and vendors

From shaping the website fundraising funnel to representing mass market fundraising in strategic planning discussions, this leader will help integrate acquisition into broader organizational growth strategies.

Building the Future Acquisition Function

This role is foundational for the future of Mercy Corps’ mass market program. As growth accelerates, the Director will:

  • Identify future staffing needs
  • Hire and manage acquisition-focused team members
  • Foster a culture of performance, testing, accountability, and continuous learning

Although the role currently has no direct reports, future team expansion is anticipated.

  • Prior people management experience

Experience with evolving marketing technology stacks, segmentation, automation, and analytics integration is highly valued.

Work Environment & Travel

This position offers remote flexibility within the United States or hybrid options in Portland, Oregon or Washington, D.C. Travel may be required up to 25% of the time for donor meetings, conferences, workshops, and retreats.
