About the Role
The Director of Advocacy Communications plays a critical leadership role in ensuring that the Internet Society’s advocacy positions are communicated clearly, strategically, and effectively to key audiences.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, Community & Advocacy, and working closely with the Head of Global Advocacy, this leader will operate at the intersection of policy, communications, and global strategy. The role ensures the organization is communications-ready to:
- Clearly articulate what it advocates for—and against
- Deliver effective global and regional advocacy campaigns
- Respond rapidly and coherently to policy developments impacting the Internet
This position requires strong familiarity with Internet governance, digital rights, or related public-interest policy environments. While not leading policy development, the Director must translate complex technical and policy issues into compelling narratives that resonate with policymakers, regulators, civil society leaders, media, and academic audiences.

Key Responsibilities
1. Advocacy Messaging & Campaigns
You will design and deliver proactive advocacy communications campaigns aligned with strategic priorities and global challenges.
This includes:
- Crafting clear, persuasive messaging that translates policy and technical insights into accessible narratives
- Maintaining global consistency in how advocacy positions are presented
- Highlighting what is at stake in emerging Internet governance debates
Your storytelling will ensure that audiences understand not only the policy details—but the broader implications for connectivity, security, and digital rights.
2. Audience-Focused Communications
Different audiences require different approaches. You will lead the development of tailored advocacy narratives that resonate across regions and stakeholder groups.
By collaborating with internal colleagues, you will adapt tone, format, and messaging strategies to engage policymakers, regulators, media professionals, academics, and civil society partners effectively.
3. Media & Public Engagement
Media strategy is central to this role. You will:
- Develop advocacy-focused media engagement strategies
- Prepare spokespeople with strong messaging and briefing materials
- Identify opportunities for commentary, interviews, and proactive narrative placement
Your expertise will ensure the organization’s voice is credible, consistent, and visible in critical moments.
4. Strategic Communications Readiness
Rapid response is essential in the fast-moving Internet policy landscape. You will build and maintain advocacy communications tools, including:
- Message frameworks and narrative guidance
- Campaign toolkits
- Rapid-response materials
You will also monitor global and regional policy developments, identifying those with broader consequences—especially those that risk Internet fragmentation or undermine security and trust.
5. Cross-Organizational Collaboration
This is a highly collaborative role. You will work closely with teams across policy, programs, leadership, and community engagement to align advocacy communications efforts.
Acting as a strategic partner, you will help refine and sharpen messaging while supporting a coordinated “One Communications” approach across the organization and the Foundation.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will bring:
- 7–10+ years of experience in advocacy or strategic communications
- Proven ability to communicate with policymakers, regulators, civil society, think tanks, media, and academia
- Background in civil society, Internet governance, digital rights, or technology policy
- Strong policy fluency and the ability to translate complex debates into compelling narratives
- Demonstrated experience supporting media engagement and spokesperson preparation
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
