About the Role
The Africa Regional Advocacy Coordinator will lead the development, coordination, and implementation of regional advocacy and lobbying strategies throughout Africa. The position focuses on ensuring that Amnesty International’s research findings, campaigns, and human rights recommendations are effectively promoted within African Union institutions, regional economic communities, and member states.
This role is ideal for professionals with extensive experience in advocacy, diplomacy, policy analysis, and international human rights engagement. The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the designated manager within the Research and Advocacy Programme and collaborate with researchers, campaigners, and civil society partners across the continent.

Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will play a central role in shaping and implementing advocacy strategies aimed at influencing decision-makers and advancing human rights protections in Africa. Major responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing regional advocacy strategies targeting African Union organs and Regional Economic Communities
- Managing advocacy projects and ensuring timely delivery within budget
- Monitoring developments within African intergovernmental systems and identifying opportunities for influence
- Conducting analysis and preparing policy briefs, submissions, and advocacy reports
- Coordinating Amnesty International’s participation in regional human rights forums and sessions
- Strengthening partnerships with local, regional, and international civil society organizations
- Building strong working relationships with African Union institutions and other stakeholders
- Supporting integrated advocacy approaches between regional and global campaigns
The role also requires close engagement with the African Peace and Security Architecture as well as regional human rights mechanisms such as the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Skills and Qualifications Required
Amnesty International is seeking candidates with strong expertise in advocacy and international human rights work. Applicants should possess:
- Extensive experience engaging with African intergovernmental organizations and regional human rights bodies
- Strong knowledge of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international relations
- Proven ability to produce advocacy documents, policy papers, and strategic analyses
- Experience conducting research for advocacy purposes, including field research
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Fluency in both English and French, written and spoken
Candidates who can effectively identify advocacy opportunities and influence policymakers on human rights issues will have a strong advantage.
