Applications Open Until 15 January 2026: Apply for the African STARS Fellowship Programme (ATT & YPP)

Africa’s future depends on a new generation of skilled scientists, innovators, and professionals who can lead solutions to the continent’s most pressing health challenges. While talent is abundant, access to advanced training and career-building opportunities remains limited for many young Africans. The African STARS Fellowship Programme was created to close this gap by empowering emerging leaders with the technical expertise, professional skills, and networks needed to drive meaningful change in public health and biotechnology.

About the African STARS Fellowship Programme

The African STARS Fellowship Programme is a flagship initiative led by the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and the Institut Pasteur de Dakar in Senegal, with support from the Mastercard Foundation. The programme is designed to strengthen Africa’s scientific workforce and leadership capacity in areas critical to epidemic preparedness, diagnostics, genomics, vaccine research, and biotechnology innovation.

By combining advanced scientific training with mentorship and real-world exposure, the fellowship equips young Africans to develop locally led solutions while contributing to global health security.

Fellowship Tracks Available

Applicants can choose from two distinct fellowship tracks, each tailored to different career stages and professional goals.

Advanced & Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship

The ATT Fellowship is a short-term, intensive programme lasting between four and six months. It focuses on strengthening advanced technical skills in priority areas such as public health genomics, genomic diagnostic design, vaccine research, and biomanufacturing innovation.

This track is ideal for early-career scientists and researchers seeking hands-on laboratory experience and exposure to cutting-edge technologies that can be directly applied to real-world health challenges across Africa.
